Captain Jack

Kiwot, a team that consists of two people - Tim Hampton and Nicholas Humphries - have created Captain Jack - a slightly smart Facebook Messenger Bot.

Nick is a developer, originally from Te Anau in the South Island. He has a strong background in conversation, having recently served on the Southland Conservation Board.  He has been to Antarctica, developed an automatic website builder for people, and is on the Pinnacle Programme. In his spare time, he enjoys the outdoors and is currently training for his Kepler Challenge (a 60km mountain run!).

Tim is a recent University of Waikato Graduate, with a strong interest in educational software.  He loves building websites & applications, and is a co-founder of Career Central - a careers management platform for New Zealand schools. It is currently used by over 30,000 students from years 9 - 13. In Tim’s spare time, he loves skiing, shooting and sleeping.

Captain Jack reads and thinks about selected data sets from New Zealand Open Data. The team have been inspired for the project after recent media coverage about water safety issues in New Zealand, and it made them think about how data in New Zealand was accessible to the general public. Currently, Captain Jack knows about marine reserves, hunting permit areas and drowning rates in New Zealand.

The team would like to add more various datasets in the future and have brainstormed ideas surrounding real estate, crime rates based on locations (after Tim's recent attempt to look for a house to buy), and tourism activity data.

We hope that you enjoy talking and chatting with Captain Jack!
