Introduction

Population ageing in New Zealand - article

http://www.stats.govt.nz/browse_for_stats/people_and_communities/older_people/pop-ageing-in-nz.aspx

Latest projections indicate that the population aged 65 years and over is expected to grow by about 100,000 during the current decade, to reach 552,000 by 2011. The pace of increase is projected to pick up after the year 2011, when the large baby boom generation begins to enter this age group. For instance, between 2011 and 2021 the elderly population is projected to grow by about 200,000 and in the following ten years by 230,000.

By 2051, there will be over 1.14 million people aged 65 years and over in New Zealand. This represents an increase of 715,000 or 166 percent over the base (1996) population. They are expected to make up 25.5 percent (or 1 in every 4) of all New Zealanders (4.49 million). At present there are about half as many elderly New Zealanders as children. By 2051, there are projected to be at least 60 percent more elderly than children. Given the prospects of sub-replacement fertility, increasing life expectancy and the passage of baby boomers into retirement ages, it is projected that half of all New Zealanders will be older than 46 years by 2051, compared with the current median age of 34 years.

The Problem

Drivers must renew their driver licence at age 75, 80 and every two years after that.

Once you turn 75 there are a few changes to the process for renewing your driver licence:

  • Your new licence will be valid for only two to five years.

  • The renewal fees are lower – because you’re renewing your licence more often.

  • You need to present a medical certificate each time you apply.

  • If recommended by your doctor, you will have to sit a 30-minute On-road Safety Test.

  • Baby Boomer generation is rapidly growing.

  • Expensive Doctor Appointments at your own expense

  • Travel to and from the eye doctor and your GP, plus glasses and prescription if required.

  • Travel to and from AA for testing

  • Awkward discussion with Grandad and Nana about driving with the kids in the car

  • Growing aging population of drivers who need to take the eye test only every 5 years then only every 2 years after the age of 80 years old.

The Solution

Mobile Eye Tests for the Elderly

Segment everyone in NZ over 65 and send them google goggles if they own a smartphone.

  • NZ Census Data

  • ACC Data

  • Here Maps

  • Google Maps

  • NZ Post

  1. Segment the ageing population and target them with a mobile eye test which can be taken at home to determine if it’s safe to drive.  Direct Mail (Branded Google Cardboard)

  2. Build a mobile app for basic eye test, chart and with LED’s for mobile and use at home, the workplace and senior living centers to run on basic smart phones.

  3. Digital Marketing via TV, Social, Web and Mobile.   Collaborative targeting using GOV data to segment the audience.  Facebook Audience Tool, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram (Premium Publishers) and Sign On services like:  AOL, Amazon, Ebay, Netflix, etc

  4. Available at pharmacy, library, and community centers.

  5. Augments or might even replace expensive driving lessons with an instructor

  6. Digital Inclusion for disabled and people with impairments or mobility.  (OPENGOV)

  7. Offer Google Cardboard in New World / Countdown / AA for families and elderly to pick up for doing eye tests at home.

  8. VR / AR Apps for Road Code, Tests and practical driving and training
