Is minimum wage enough for the rising food cost in New Zealand? We use a collection of visual presentations to show that the answer is no.
Our graphs are generated by analyzing government data on minimum wage and food price index. By comparing their growth rates, users can draw the conclusion for themselves that food price is becoming more and more unaffordable for people who are earning modest wages. By comparing food prices and minimum wages in different countries, it is apparent that Kiwis can afford less food than their counterparts in Australia and UK.
Our website is here to educate and to help. People who wish to engage in policy advocacy can use our straight forward graphs to raise awareness. People who are struggling to afford well-balanced meals can use the calculator we are developing to plan their food purchases and stay within budget.
