This team of two, with software engineering backgrounds and a keen interest in open data, set out to explore complementary features to further explain the child care administrative dataset, in the hope of providing some insights to DET.
On our journey we dove head first into the ABS portal to investigate, extract, and design new features with the aim of employing machine learning techniques.
These features would be used to build a model to predict and estimate the optimal number of child care facilities in a region (officially known as SA3 throughout Australia). We use the rendered NSW and VIC dataset for model verification and providing the ground truths.
