In 2015 New Zealand adopted the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has emphasised the importance of measuring and tracking New Zealand’s progress towards these goals without the addition of layers of bureaucracy. The need for an cross-Government approach has been acknowledged but to date no measures or tools have been delivered.
The goals of our project are threefold:
(1) We leverage open data to provide a dashboard tool which allows New Zealand to measure and track its progress towards the 17 Sustainable Development Goals;
(2) We provide an API which allows participation in the project thereby facilitating stakeholder engagement and empowerment; and
(3) Our final goal is incidental to the other two. We hope our project will encourage the population of further government datasets on the open data landscape, in the pursuit of enhanced transparency and open government.
We have used datasets exclusively from data.govt.nz and have requested additional data from this provider.
