Ballarat Public Health & Wellbeing

How can we encourage our community to become more active by utilising Ballarat features? How do we get them to choose to walk or cycle more, and leave the car at home? Can we help the community to make healthy choices?

The Ballarat community has a serious weight problem, with 61% of adults either overweight or obese, far higher than the state average of 50%.

Not surprisingly we also have a high rate of chronic disease (58% of population have at least one chronic disease), with at least a third of these brought on by poor health behaviours, eating unhealthy foods, being too sedentary, smoking or drinking too much.

In a City with so many brilliant assets, a vibrant culture, much loved values and fascinating history, how can our community be one of the unhealthiest in the state?

How can we encourage our community to become more active by utilising Ballarat features? How do we get them to choose to walk or cycle more, and leave the car at home?

Can we help the community to make healthy choices?
